As people get more and more creative and original in planning their weddings, the wedding cake is popping up in some unique forms as well. This article is especially for those who want to do something different with their cake.
1. One unique idea I've seen is the idea of creating "cakes" out of tiered pastries. Most of your guests probably love pastries. There is any number of designs you can create with them, since they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.
You can use cinnamon rolls, baklava, funnel cakes, Twinkies, souffles, cream horns, St. Joseph's pastries, eclairs, cannoli, napoleons, Sno Balls, Suzy Qs, HoHos, Ding Dongs, doughnuts, even Moon Pies. Some people have also tried brownies or sugar cookies, complete with the couple's initials on them.
You could stack up chocolate-dipped fruit or fancy pies like coconut custard, key lime, white chocolate cream, or peanut butter pies. Just remember that if you try the tiered pastry "cake," don't forsake other parts of the wedding cake ceremony. Most people will expect these traditions.
2. During the summer time, beach-themed weddings are popular, complete with a beach wedding cake. To create the beach look, you could put sea shells on the cake, in a couple of different ways. You could either have your cake designer make shells out of fondant, so that they become part of the cake. Or you could buy some real shells and place them on top of the cake (the part that nobody is going to eat--so nobody accidentally tries to bite into one. Ouch!)
Another possibility is to buy some fisherman net, which you then lace under your cake. This will give it a nice sea look and feeling. One final beach idea is to order a cake that looks like a sand castle. Or if you prefer, request a cake that is designed to look like a lighthouse. With either the castle or lighthouse, you could include a lot of water and beach related objects, placed strategically around the cake.
3. One final trend that is growing, some might like, and others might find it to be tacky. This is the idea of a rented wedding cake. A few cake designers and / or caterers will provide for the wedding party a foam "cake," covered with actual fondant. It looks exactly like the real thing, and can be quite beautiful. Inside the cake, is a hollowed-out space that is able to hold a small part of an edible cake, that the couple will use for the cake ceremonies. After the bride and groom feed each other these slices, the rest of the rented cake is moved to the kitchen, while the catering staff then serves the guests with a sheet cake, bought at a local store.
Once the day's festivities are completed, the foam cake is returned to the place that rented it to you. While some people might think it seems wrong to use a "fake" cake, there are some good points with the idea. First, you don't have to worry about the cake falling over (No " America 's Funniest Home Video" opportunity here!) Second, it won't melt before you eat it. Third, there will be no temptation for kids to stick their fingers in it. And fourth, of course, is the fact that it costs less money. If this seems like an idea you'd like to try, talk with your local cake designer or caterer and ask if they offer this option. |
